Graver Expansion Roof Tank

Tuesday, September 06, 2005   By: Ben
Is anyone familiar with the old Graver Expansion Roof tank design (this is a type of external floating roof)? We have one that has been out of service for a number of years and we would like to know where to obtain infomation about the proper maintenance/operation/inspection of the roof system in particular. Best Regards, Ben

If I am right about what your tank is, it is not an external floating roof tank, it is a tank whose roof can move up or down as necessary to maintain low pressure operation without allowing vapors to escape as the liquid level irses and falls. Of all the expansion roof ( lifter roof ) tanks I have seen, all have been converted into cone roof tanks by disabling the mechanism and allowing the roof to rest on the tank top. Mostly these have been for tanks beeing fitted with internal floating roofs due to the product being stored. Does this seem to describe your tank? What product is being stored?

I have seen information on a Graver tank that was designed for holding gaseous products, with roof that went up and down (IE, gasholder tank). Not sure if this is what either one of you is talking about?

The Horton/Graver Expander Roof has a fabric seal attached to the shell and also to the rising portion of the cover. They also had gas tight gauge fittings and gauge hatches. Same as spheres and spheroids. All I have seen have been converted to either cone roof tanks or IFR's. They are quite complex and there are a lot of places liquids can hide. Some operators are cutting off the cover and installing a new cone roof. However for diesel or JP service, the tanks can be used as is if there is no local restrictions for cone roof tanks. I would recommend a full 653 before putting the tanks back in service. Also these tanks were painted with lead paint so this may be a concern if the original coating has not been removed.

Atmospheric Design Pressure
By: Fathi [46]

The whole story is to avoid brittle fracture=

Test temperature shall be equal or warmer than Minimum Metal Design temperature at Test pressure.
------------------

I would limit my minimum testing temperature for a tank (or even for a vessel or a piping system) by the =

Temp = maximum of [ Min(lower shell) , Min(shell# 2) ....Min (Upper shell) ]

For a Shell# i the minimum is function ( of shell tickness , Material group ) and this can be found in API 650 , Fig 2-1
