Can anybody suggest- Procedure Qualification - Appendix Q

Wednesday, September 10, 2003   By: Yogendra
As per aapendix Q, Q-6.1- When the filler metal has an unspecified yield strength, a specified minimum yield or .......... We have qualified a procedure for SA553 Type 1, using ENiCrMo-6 and other procedure using ERNiCrMo-3. Both procedure test coupons were welded at construction site. In both the cases - Does it require to go for All weld metal tensile test in PQR test pieces itself or Instead of carring out the all weld metal tensile testing in the PQR test pieces, can we refer the All weld metal tesile results shown by the manufacturer of the electrode and filler wire in the test certificates ,which the manufacurer has carried out at their factory.

When you do not know what procedure to use, then you should consider a procedure qualification that best fits what you are welding. I read your question several times and I have to read into what you want. You did ot tell us what the thicknesses or the base material, service and temperature, or other important imformation that is needed to answer your question (s). You did not mention anything about preheat or post weld heat treatment. I would be pleased to help you but I need better information. Remember, it is very likely that you will need more than tensile specimens to qualify the weld. Bend test may need to be required too. Lawrence

We have qualified a weld procedure, for the base metal SA 553 Type 1 with electrode ENiCrMo-6 in 3G position. In order to qualify the procedure as per section IX, we have carried out all tests e.g, Tensile , bend, impact,hardness etc. Since the application calls for the Use of Appedix-Q and as per Appendix -Q clause 6.1(since the specified Tensile stregth of the electrode is 620 MPa , and of base metal is 690 Mpa) , we have to carry out the two all weld metal tensile tests also. My question is only for the All weld tensile test as required by above clause. My Query is - Instead of all weld metal tensile test in PQR test coupon, is it possible to refer the electrode test certificate, certified by manufacturer for all weld metal tensile test results. Or in other way , in order to meet the requirements of clause 6.1 of Appendix Q, is it necessary to go for all weld metal test from the PQR test coupon itself or for this test we can refer the electrode manufacturer test certificate (where allready all weld metal test results are given, which were carried out at their factory). I hope , My query is now more clear and you will suggest me.

Dear Yogendra I am really struggling to understand which code version you are referring. Section IX currently does not have an Appendix Q [Obsolete - removed]. Murphy

Atmospheric Design Pressure
By: Fathi [46]

The whole story is to avoid brittle fracture=

Test temperature shall be equal or warmer than Minimum Metal Design temperature at Test pressure.

I would limit my minimum testing temperature for a tank (or even for a vessel or a piping system) by the =

Temp = maximum of [ Min(lower shell) , Min(shell# 2) ....Min (Upper shell) ]

For a Shell# i the minimum is function ( of shell tickness , Material group ) and this can be found in API 650 , Fig 2-1
