First, have you done any tank inspections or have background in aboveground storage tank repair or construction? Just using online recourses to attempt passing the 653 will be difficult. Just reading, knowing and understanding the Body of Knowledge is really all that is necessary.
Easy.
If you know what you are reading. A 653 has to have a grasp on several disciplines.
Welding
Coating
Cathodic Protection
Construction
NDE
Civil Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Safety
No one is a expert in all, but you need to have a understanding of each and how it applies to tank repair and construction.
I never took the prep class for my test. I was doing inspections for two years and learned in the field. I have a background in welding, inspection, NDE, and civil. And it has been 22 years since I took the thing.

Passing the test is application of discipline to sit down and read. You can pay a bunch of money which may or may not force you to do what you can do for free. If you take the BOK and study it for a month every day and have a application where you can use this knowledge you are acquiring on a somewhat consistent basis, you should be able to pass this test without a prep class. However, if you have doubts about your discipline, I would recommend the on site prep classes. If you cant take the time to study on your own, you will not take the time to use a online class.
Just my opinion.

Dear Mr. BABRTs
I am very happy with your attention and your response and hopefully become to add spirit for my life journey.
Daily activities as a special counselor of the tank, To provide input to get Tank conditions under FFS conditions at least for a Ten Year Look Ahead for Refinery PERTAMINA Cilacap – Indonesia
I started working on API 650 tank construction as a tank engineer since 1973 after graduating mechanical engineer from technic college from 1972 till now.
To describe the history of my tank work experience and daily activities that I do up to now, I expect to get Mr. Babrts email address or if it does not bother to help me please to be sent directly to email address ekarsadi@gmail.com
Ive read it, Im just curious, because I studied the field and practiced of API 575, API 579, API 650, API 651, API 652, API 653, API 2000 and others.
In the meantime I like to read API 653: Tank Inspection Code, writing from Harvard Technology Middle East with Mr. Ron Van Arsdale as Course Instructor s
Indeed, I am aware and admit I cannot fully understand or memorize it outside, but at least I have read it and it is worthwhile commenting and reviewing the assessment report by the contractor as a basis for overhaul or modification of existing tanks in order to be a condition of a proper tank or Fitness- for-Service or suitability for service
So little history of my life journey that begged to be given way to reach has a certificate API 653 Tank Inspector.
Sorry if there is a shortage in conveying the desire that until now has not been done.
Again I look forward to his help and thank you very much for his attention and assistance.
Respectfully yours
Karsadi

Go to the API ICP site and bring up the 653 Inspector section. In it you will find the Body of Knowledge which covers what will be required to know for the test. With your long involvement with 650 a bunch of this should be easy. However there is a difference in 650 vs 653. Also the test will be covering your ability to establish next inspection intervals based on corrosion rates. Also the evaluation of shell corrosion and the extent requiring repair. You should also know how to review Section IX welding procedures WPS, Procedure Qualifications PQR and welder qualifications WPQ. Selection of welding electrodes. Coatings and linings and how they pertain to next inspection intervals and a basic understanding of cathodic protection. Safety during inspections and API 575 will be covered in the closed book part of the test. Understand Appendix B in 653 for settlement and the requirements of settlement surveys and edge settlement evaluation.
The order of priorities for study are:
API 653
API 575
ASME Section IX
ASME Section V as it pertains to the BOK
API 650
API 651
API 652
API 571
API 577

Like you, we would think that there would be an online preparation course for API653 Inspectors Exam in todays openness. I know of none.

With that said I cannot imagine how complex the lessons would be, for as you know the reference materials are many and weighty - I dont think that is a word but I like the context of it.

Honeycomb Panel IFR
By: davidr@fast.net [39]

Honeycomb panels used on internal floating roofs are a sandwich construction consisting of an upper and lower skin with core in between. The materials are most often aluminum. In this scenario, the core is usually 0.003 thick aluminum foil expanded to a six sided shape similar to what bees make in their hives, hence the name honeycomb. The top and bottom skins are 0.16 minimum, sometimes as thick as 0.040. The core may be of solid aluminum foil or it may have perforations. The perforations ....   Read All
