Api 650 - adding a manway in a small tank

Saturday, December 30, 2017   By: Erez [1904] 0 Stars
Hi all,
would like to get some help. I have a small tank which I would like to add a 600mm manway,
And I want to know if I gotta have reinforcement.
tank height : 3 m
tank diameter: 2.7 m
shell thickness : 10 mm
i read that since it is a small tank it should have min shell thickness of 5 mm and the rest can be considered as reinforcement.
what I didnt seem to find is what should have been the reinforcing plate thickness.

Thanks.

Erez.

Of course you need to consider reinforcement of a shell opening. You should review the standard again.

Please see API 650, table 5-4 then read footnote b and you follow so on until you understand what you should do, good luck

Yes, the opening should be reinforced. When you perform the calculations you can include as reinforcement portions of the neck and excess shell plate thickness as allowed by code.

Honeycomb Panel IFR

In this scenario, the core is usually 0.003 thick aluminum foil expanded to a six sided shape similar to what bees make in their hives, hence the name honeycomb. The top and bottom skins are 0.16 minimum, sometimes as thick as 0.040. The core may be of solid aluminum foil or it may have perforations. The perforations ....   Read All
