Aluminium Internal Floating Roof

Thursday, May 25, 2017   By: Kumaran [1861] 1 Stars
In case of an IFR tank especially the one with Aluminum Pontoon IFR the fire protection is designed considering the entire liquid surface as done in a normal cone roof tank.

What happens to IFR in an event of a small fire in the tank and the foam is sprayed inside the tank. Will the IFR withstand? and function as normal after the fire is put off. ?

Normal in case of steel IFRs foam is poured on the IFR and tested when the tank is empty before the tank is put in operation. Is this possible with Aluminum IFR? Will the Aluminum IFR not get damaged? Can you advise me the correct procedure.

The first thing to remember is that fires in tanks fitted with an IFR are extremely rare. My view is that since the aluminum foil sheeting used in the IFR is less than 1 mm thick, it will melt or best warp as soon as exposed to flames and this will destroy the IFR. The benefit of this is that the stored product is immediately exposed to the fire supression foam and it should be much easier to control the fire.

I agree with Dunedin, and complement. - The water and the foam generating product shall be specified not to cause damage to the aluminum alloy used in the manufacture of the IRF or the aluminum alloy specified by the design to be compatible with the products and utilities to which they will be exposed.

If you are referring to the weight of the foam on the IRF, I think there will be balance, because the IRF will be floating on the product stored in the tank and it will be escaping through the peripheral seal and mixing with the stored fluid.

Compatabilty of fire suppression products with the aluminum alloys used in manufacture of the IFR is not so important as the only time they will be in contact with each other is when there is a fire. Concerning the weight of the fire suppression products on top of the IFR this will not be an issue as all IFR,s have excess buoyancy built into their design.

Honeycomb Panel IFR
By: davidr@fast.net [39]

Honeycomb panels used on internal floating roofs are a sandwich construction consisting of an upper and lower skin with core in between. The materials are most often aluminum. In this scenario, the core is usually 0.003 thick aluminum foil expanded to a six sided shape similar to what bees make in their hives, hence the name honeycomb. The top and bottom skins are 0.16 minimum, sometimes as thick as 0.040. The core may be of solid aluminum foil or it may have perforations. The perforations ....   Read All
