Website issues - Wednesday, April 25, 2012 - Tankee [235]
Has anyone else had problems accessing the AST Forum website in the last few days? I saw that goofy spam-like post last week from some idiot salesman, and after that, when I would try to open the site, I would get a Server Error message. Is it from the new upgrades that Earl mentioned, or did it get hit by some sort of virus thing? Anyway, glad its back up...at least for now.
We had been down for two-days as you know. Just so you have an idea of the problem, when we secured our server with its' software we learned that free open source (generic) software was installed, which works on many many servers worldwide. What we found is it was not as stable as some think, so the right thing to do was to purchase the real software. Lesson learned. Hopefully there are fewer big surprises down the road like that, for it was frustrating.
Your Friend Earl
PS - We do get assaulted by world-wide-web terrorist on a daily basis which you may not see since we did changes/upgrades a few year ago. The 'get money and work from home' types are more like a blood sucking - meat eat black fly, but the hacking terrors are like an organized Army. The carnivore black fly I can swat, but there is a lot of them.

I can use a computer pretty well, but the whole server / internet coding / JavaHTMLscriptcode thing is beyond me. Im in the middle of the book Kingpin about the guy that hacked his way to the top of the creditcard theivery ring. Pretty wild story and a good book. It has given me a small peak into the background world of web forums, servers, and the many security holes and the number of people out there trying to find and expliot them. My hat is off to you and your efforts to keep this site running.
AST-Forum .com and astforum.com - Tuesday, May 01, 2012 - Earl
Dear Friend
First, thank you for your kind words. Going to a server was like looking out in to the abyss. It was frightening because we knew we had some experience, but not enough experience. Looking back the driving force was cost, but in the transition, what we found is the people we hired put your forum in jeopardy by storing us in a database that was obsolete a half decade ago. That took some time for Robby (our code man) to write code to move literally 10s of thousands of obsolete db format to today's standard db format without one-mistake. I was sweating bullets for back in 2006 my staff hand typed every old entry into that obsolete db! Rob and I scoured everywhere we could think and we could not even buy the software to make the transition last month! We were lead to believe the old server db was appropriate.
The upside of this odyssey was we are finally in control with enormous (from my perspective) features that we will slowly be rolled-out over time. We will be doing a tummy-tuck and face lift on Earl, but I don't know when that will occur for it has been in the works since 2008. We have been working on an APP for Android OS, but we but that on the back burner for now. One of the most immediate features of going to our own server was larger files can be uploaded.
Over the next two-months you will notice your forum will be down for about an hours every so often and I hope you are not trying to post or reply at that moment. This is what I think is called hardening, kind of like steel. If you find we are down for more than a few hours then we will be down for 48-hours in my experience, for I will have to bring some geniuses in to help me.
I am now looking in to the Server abyss with as an Explorer does instead of fear of what lies around the corner. We know what lies around the corner the army of terrorists hacking away by the anarchist or country sponsor saboteurs like mindless and soulless machines. Well we will do our best like Boy Scouts to be prepared as best as we can.
Finally, the funding comes in-part from our Advertisers! ...and I must say I love to read the replies for they are well done and especially when words like Oops are used and those beautiful down to earth phrases.
