    • Regarding observation of bottom plate after Hydrotest - Wednesday, April 18, 2012 - Zeon [634] 1 Stars
      Dear Experts,

After Hydrotest of water storage tank Apprx. Size Dia. 10 m & capacity 1000 Cum we have observed that there are localized bulging & vibration movements at three locations and bottom slope reverse its slope from cone up at center to cone down.As per detailed analysis report from consultants settlements at bottom are with in limits of API 653 standard. But as a tank vendor i am really worried for such unusual observation of vibration & reversing of slope.

Can any body guide me on this issue how to take it further.

      Regards,
      Zeon

The settlements cant possibly be OK if your tank went from cone up to cone down. The foundation failed. Or the design was flawed. Even if they are within API dimensional tolerances which I have a hard time believing your tank may not perform as designed with the new floor slope. I would not accept this without a complete design review.

I have seen where a cone up center has sunk to a cone down with the foundation still meeting API 653, but typically it is in a larger diameter tank. Im assuming the vibration you talk about is the floor rippling when you walk on a bulge. The bulges are from the settlement of the cone. When it settled down the steel needed to go somewhere, so it buckled up in different areas. Im guessing pretty close to around the center since your outer foundation wasnt affected much.

The foundation material to cone the floor up went somewhere down. The question is, Is it done? As recommended, look at your foundation design and try to figure out what the problem is and how severe it might be. If you want / need a cone up you will need to cut out the plates in the center and put in more material to cone it back up. This might not fix the problem, it might just settle down again if your foundation isnt done settling. If your foundation is too poor, you might never fix the problem enough to maintain a cone-up floor.

You also should examine your floor welds for cracks since the plates are now buckling up and down. Which brings up the point of how bad your buckles are. Each time the tank is filled and emptied, the floor is going to pop down and then up where the buckles are and you will cycle your welds. This could lead to cracking and significant weld failures.

You did not specify if the was a new tank or a repair.
If fhis is a new tank and was built to API 650 then the tank is not acceptable.Reason being the tank was speced to have a cone up profile and now is cone down.
Just a WAG but it appears the sand base was not properly laid or compacted before the floor was laid.
Again if this is a new tank acceptatble settlement is based on API 650 NOT 653.
And if I was the customer and saw this train wreck, I would be all over the tank to see what else was wrong.

          Dear Experts ,

          Thanks for your valuable feedback.

The tank is new tank.Secondly even for me it is also hard to digest that as per the consultant bottom settlement is under acceptable limits of API 653 criteria when cone has gone down from up.
