    • Imploded tank result unknown - Tuesday, April 10, 2012 - Gajendra India [1323] 0 Stars
Dear All one of the pitch tank at my location
got deformaed results unknown Some of the foundings
1.Vent nozzle at the top of the tank was open .
2.Trends of operations are in working range
3.As this is a holding tank for coal tar pitch so tempreture was
monitored ,both tempreture sensors as two are installed are showing
value of 195 which is in the normal range .
4,No abnormilities detected in HTMHeat transfer media system .
HTM system is installed in tank to maintain the heat 180 to 210normalyy
at the bottom of the tank ,bottom coil With HTM circulation is there
      tempreture found within normal range.
upto the level of 1.5 mtrs there is a immersion heaterHTM flow is
working well as temp found normal.
there is vertical hair pin coil installed in the tank to avoid
solidification layer by layer temp flow of oil found normal.

Dimensions of tanks are 10 mtr 11 mtr holding capicity is 1000 MT
      .
Note: tank is insulated with IS 8183 225 mm thick insulation wool
      with aluminum sheets

No internal or external stiffners are provided in the tank ,

        Is the vent properly sized?

Are there any obstructions to the vent? Things like, maybe the screen is plugged up or the opening inside is plugged with material?

As per the designer Outotec there is one overflow cum vent line provided inside the tank which terminates inthe overflow pot at the ground level this entire system of venting cum overflow is worling on theory communicating vessels .We are not sure whtere this overflow cum vent line is a correct design.May i know how it works .

My guess ius regardelss how much venting there is or how much there should be, what you do have is plugged.
Again a guess this occured while the tank was being pumped out. As the tank is operating at temperature the material itself will have a vapor that will interfere with the operation of the venting. If you know the tank has a open vent, that is where I would start checking first. And that is not to say a plug in a open vent could not be sucked back into the tank when it pulled in. If you have conventional vacuum vents, remove them and clean them.
Again a guess, the vacuum vents are not operating properly beigh gumed with the material in the tank.

It looks like a vacuum failure.
You may have badly corroded tank shell under that insulation - pull the insulation and UT the shell.
Could the material have solidified, stuck to the shell and as you withdrew product pulled the shell in?
Please describe all the deformation to the tank.- is it just at the picture, is it all around, etc.

NO shell is not corroded /after removing insulation we found that welding and shell is intact /tank is imploded thru out its periphery from 3 mtrs height to 11 mtrs .Tank installed in 2005 only

Definitely looks like a venting issue if the shell was in good condition.

Id expect damage to the fixed roof - was it sucked in? If not, why not? What made it stronger than the shell?

Additional stiffners are provided at roof top due to which it is not imploded i think
