    • Seal Inspections - Tuesday, March 13, 2012 - Some one needing help! [1302] 0 Stars
      Dear experts,
I am having a hard time finding the tolerances for the gaps allowed on the primary and secondary seals of an in-service tank with a floating roof. Thanks for the help in advance.

E.P.A. 60.113b,b,4,ii,B requirements for secondary seals are the accumulated area of gaps between the tank wall and secondary seal shall not exceed 1.0 inch squared per foot of tank diameter, and the width of any portion of any gap shall not exceed ½ inch.
E.P.A. 60.113b,b,4,i requirements for primary seals are the accumulated gaps between the tank wall and the liquid-mounted primary seal shall not exceed 10.0 inch squared per foot of tank diameter, and the width of any portion of any gap shall not exceed 1.5 inch.
        Hope this helps.

I think that some States might also get more prescriptive on how to measure those gaps and such. You should check the State regs. too.

Texas and New Mexico requirement for the secondary is 0 allowed. I use a one eighth brass welding rod to test the secondary. I have done these inspection with a state inspector on my elbow with no issues. I have the formula for the primary allowed seal gap but you can get it from TCEQ for Texas.
