    • Spacing of Tanks in a Common Firewall - Wednesday, February 15, 2012 - BABRTs 973 [53] 5 Stars
Does anyone have an opinion on spacing tanks for future site work in a common firewall.
The client I am working for is looking at building 2 – 120 foot diameter tanks in a common firewall. The question is: If in the future one tank is down for repairs how far away does the operating tank need to be for hot work to be done on the tank that is out of service.
These tanks will be field gathering tanks so limiting fill/issue into the operating tank during hot work on the OOS tank will not be a option.
I cannot find a regulatory reference to this distance and would appreciate guidance. The client is looking at doing this in at lest 4 locations and is hung up until this issue can be resolved. Due to space restrictions separate firewalls is not an option.
My recommendation is 100 feet shell to shell but I cannot support that distance with any regulatory references and at this point a WAG is not acceptable.

NFPA 30 Section 22 has requirements on minimum tank spacing. That should help some.

Does the owner/operator have any policies on hot-work near operating tanks? Do they intend to set any? Wouldnt be good for them to decide you need 150 if you put the tanks 100 apart.

The further the better and use lots of LEL monitors.

That was my inital comment on it. However they want a regulatory requirement. I found the NFPA recommendation, and thanks for the tip. I would have to think twice on doing hot work with a operating tank within 60 feet. However, as these are new tanks, if properly constructed and installed bottom replacement would be 20 to 30 years out. And as these tanks are being used as field gathering tanks. the operating conditions in that time frame can and will be different.
Other than NFPA I have not found other requirements or recommendations for tank spacing.

You may want to look into API STANDARD 2610 Design, Construction, Operation, Maintenance, and Inspection of Terminal & Tank Facilities.

Insurance companies generally recommend to follow GAP.17.3.4 Crude Oil and Products Storage Terminals and related GAP guidelines for spacing and layout.
