    • Vacuum box testing - Wednesday, January 18, 2012 - Goost [1058] 0 Stars
      Dear Reader,

      recently one question came up:

Is the use of a vacuum box for detecting cracks of use or not?
Has anyone ever found a crack, pore, etc. on a weld of : -bottom plate - corner weld -shell welds?
I am not talking about random tasks, but traceable results.

Thanks for your educated answers or inputs.

      Goost

VB can find a crack, if it is all the way through. However there are better ways of crack detecting than a vacuum box. I can only remember finding a crack on a lap weld twice and in both cases it was on a sump flange to floor plate breakdown weld.
Diesel testing of the corner weld will find discontunities a lot easier than a right angle vacuum box.
If a crack is suspected in the corner weld mag testing should find a crack.

To specifically find cracks in welds, as BABRTs mentioned, there are better methods since a VB test will only find through holes / cracks. That said, a VB test can be quite effective in finding leaks holes, pores, cracks, etc in welds and plates usually used on welds. So, if your question is: Is it worthwhile to perform vacuum box testing? the answer is Yes.

It is a quick and easy test to look for leaks and can be performed and witnessed by people with just a minimum amount of training.
