    • LIFE SPAN OF LIQUID MOUNTED FOAM CASING - Saturday, October 29, 2011 - Mannish [1228] 0 Stars
Note that Sweet Vacuum Gas oil floating roof tanks, product is stored at approx 78 deg C. Within 2 years of service life foam casing found in damaged condition. Foam casing was Nitrile reinforced Polyurethane 2 mm Thick. We need to go with suitable foam casing suitable with service fluid with suitable life e.g. 10 Years and more. Pl let us reply. For RJ crude in my region is stored at 80 Deg C with Sourness H2S suggest suitable foam casing material for liquid mounted foam seal.

To the best of my knowledge, the Foam casing used by you is Polyurethane Coated NYLON Fabric as reinforcement, 2 MM Thick.

It is well documented that Polyurethane Coating starts to deteriorate at 70 degrees C.

Changing the Casing Material to Fluorocarbons VITON is not a cost effective solution, since Liquid Mounted Foam Seals will eventually fail at the Casing Joints made in the field, irrespective of the selection of the casing material.
The choice of responsible and reputed tank builders is invariably Mechanical Shoe Seals.

API 650 and Petroleum Institute Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards API MPMS Chapter 19.2 caution against the use of Liquid Mounted Foam Seals.
It will be better to changeover to Mechanical Shoe Seals, which have life in excess of 15 years.

I have to agree 100% with Archer a Mechanical Seal is the best long term option for you and I would suggest you contact L&M TankServ www.landandmarine.com who should be able to recommend a specific type.

Indian crude in your region is a High Pour Point Waxy Crude and hence requires Wax Scrapers to prevent accumulation of wax on the deck. Since Liquid Mounted Foam Seals can not be fitted with Wax Scrapers, only Mechanical Shoe Seals with Wax Scrapers should be used with Waxy Crudes

I’m not sure where this documentation is located for the deterioration of the Polyurethane fabric and I’m not challenging it, but I have used a MESA Urethane product for decades that handles temperatures up to 80 degrees C for such an installation giving a life span of 10 to 15 years. Foam log seals do have their uses, but I am not a big fan as they are old technology and the cost delta for a mechanical shoe seal is more than offset by the reliably double life span of a mechanical shoe. This particular incident centers around a tank with “Sweet Vacuum Gas Oil”. My experience is the makeup of this product like so many other “generic” labels will vary from refinery to refinery and that this very premature failure is due to a sub component of the product that is very detrimental to the Polyurethane, even for vapor contact, much less liquid contact.
