    • API 650: HYDROSTACTIC TEST - Tuesday, February 01, 2011 - mario.selva@ibw.com.ni [1008] 0 Stars
      Hi Everybody:
Could anyone help me with the following doubt?:
We just finished to build a 5,000m3 API 650 tank. We are planning the hydrostatic test, however, we are not installed the firefighting pipeline which will be supported on the tank shell. We neither installed the datum plate at bottom of the tank. Can we do the hydrostatic test even though we are going to do further welding jobs at the tank shell and bottom after this test?.
Thank in advance for your help
      Best Regards,

Per API 650, after completion of the hydro-test, only non-structural small attachments may be welded to the tank. API 650 does not really define these items, but I think that the items you mention could be welded to the tank after hydro with appropriate NDE. If the shell is made from high strength material, you may have to weld prior to hydrotest.

Tank you Eddy for your soon response.
          What is NDE?
Exactly that is my doubt since API 650 just mentioned small non-structural items. The metal sheets that we are using for the shell are A-36. My concern is that pipelines supports attached to shell will transmit weight over the welding. I know that this supports are non structural items but it seems to me that this will affect the tank. I want to have the standard support to require to the contractor to wait until we install the firefighting pipeline.
          Best Regards,

NDE Non Destructive Examination x-ray, visual, magnetic particle, vacuum box, etc. My best advice would be to get the purchaser of the tank to agree with you one way or the other, then proceed. I normally like to see everything welded to my tanks prior to hydrotest but then again, I do lots of projects where such items are welded onto existing tanks with no ill effects.

I agree this should be up to the tank owner. Firefighting supports and the datum plate could be considered non critical, and that is what I would recommend, but it would be up to the owner.

You can and probably should calculate the stresses on the shell from the water pipe loading to assure yourself and the owner that it is OK. Make sure the datum plate is located per API 650 and 653 weld spacing, etc.
