    • Under side corrosion annular plate critical zone - Sunday, November 16, 2008 - Manish [426] 0 Stars
We are having 66 m diameter cone roof tank.

      Product stored: Fuel oil
      Design temperature:93 deg C
      Annular plate thickness: 12mm
      Sketch plate thickness : 8mm
      Tank type: Insulated

We are facing a problem of underside corrosion of max 9.3 mm and min 3.8mm Nominal thickness 12mmin the annular plate in Pattern with band of 200mm width from shell to bottom annular weld throughout the periphery of tank.

      What is the remedial measure?
As per API 653 following points are mentioned for repair in critical zone
1.Max plate thickness on critical zone is 1/4 inch
2.butt welding is not permitted to join two patch plate
3.Patch plate shall be in the shape of tombstones shape.
4.If more extensive repair bottom plate weld to shell shall be cut out and new plate to be welded.

I would like to know in my case repair of annular plate by patch plate is permitted? or it should be taken as extensive repair and annular plate to be repaired.

I would also like to know anybody having experience of repairing of annular plate more than 80% and what methodolgy they applied for repair

Also what could be the probable cause of annular plate under side corrosion ingress of water between annular plate and foundation? anyone having same experience

I would be greatful if i could a get a best possible solution for my above said problems.

Refer to API 653 4.2.4.3 Operation at Elevated Temperatures. This refers back to API 650 Appendix M
My experience with corrosion on insulated tanks operating over 180 F is the corrosion occurs in the cooler zone along the bottom and if the proper insulation is not on the shell up the shell until the temp is above 212 F. If you do not have corrosion on the shell, then you have the right insulation on the shell.
The corrosion on the bottom is due to moisture being held in this area. The temperature is not high enough to cook off the moisture or there is something trapping the moisture in this area. I have seen asphalt padding hold moisture and also a concrete ringwall holds moisture and also acts as a heat sink to keep the temp at the bottom next to the shell lower.

Thanks Mr BABRTS for your reply. But i would like to know if there is a under side corrosion along the periphery in the widhth of 200mm from shell to bottom weld towards annular plate in more than 70% of area in tank dia of 57m.It is good to put a patch in the area and seal the gap between concrete foundationa and annular plate?or you have any other repair methodology?please help me out

My recommendation on heated tanks with annular plates and corrosion in the critical zone is to replace the annular plates. API 650 Appendix M 4.1

I would not recommend sealing the bottom to the foundation. This will only compound the problem of moisture in the temperature transition zone. You may want to go with a thicker annular plate for additional corrosion allowance. If the tank is not on a concrete ringwall you may want to install a crushed rock fill at the annular ring. If the tank in on a ringwall and has a sand cushion you may want to remove the sand under the annular plates and install washed 3/8 pea gravel under the annular ring to help keep the area dryer. You may want to do all of this.

But for elevated temperature tanks, my recommendation for repairs would never to allow lap patches in the critical zone. You may want to consult with a tank engineer who has extensive experience in repairs to elevated temperature tanks.

              Dear babrt
Thank you for your reply.I would like to know whether there is any inspection technique available to scan the portion of annular plate benath the shell plate.Shell thickness is 37mm and annular plate is extenede 1 outisde the shell plate. We would like to check the integrity of annular plate.Tank is opened for maintennace and inspection. So it can be done form inside the tank.

We recently carried out Long range UT TALRUT to check the condition of the annular plate, upto 400mm from the shell. The result was verified by a physical check and was found to be correct.

For this to be done, the chime has to be in a good condition minimum 5mm thick. The technique is claimed to work only upto 400 - 500 mm from the shell and can be done with the tank online.

Since your tank is out of service, you could open a pocket in the foundation under the shell to annular joint and carry out UT.
