    • Gauge well pipe top support weld failure - Monday, September 29, 2008 - manish [426] 0 Stars
We are experiencing a problem in our Gauge well pipe.Tank is 92m dia having a gauge well pipe of 8 supported in top landing platform and other support in bottom with shell. We observed top support in landing platform broken. What are the possible chance of failure of weld in the top support. What are the possible reason that could provide load on the weld?

When a tank shell is loaded in tension, it also shortens slightly, which would create some differential movement. Internal pressure or vacuum could flex the roof up or down. Temperature differential would create some differential movement. Bottom settlement could allow the pipe to drop.

Most of the tanks that I see have a sleeve of larger pipe welded to the underside of the roof. That way if the bottom settles the gauge well pipe can just slide in that guide.

Does the gauge pole also serve as anti-rotation for a floating roof? If so, the forces from the floating roof can affect the gauge pole.
