How do you calculate the NPS for the drain? Use maximum rainfall rate/hour and design for that flow rate through the piping/hose system. How do you calculate how many drains are necessary? Would be arbitrary, unless your drain size exceeded the size of fittings available. Normally one. I know that the roof must be designed to hold a certain amount of water but what is this amount, API states 10ins in 24 hours but does this assume that no water drains off and that the roof must accommodate 10 ins of water over the entire roof surface? Yes, it is stated that this is with the primary drains inoperative, so it assumes no water drains off. The 10" of water won't actually be distributed over the whole surface, but that quantity of water must be supported. There are essentially three types of systems - flexible hose, pipe & swivel joint and pipe & flexible joint, but has anyone advice on which is best. No opinion. Finally, who is normally held responsible for the Design (and Specification) of the tank roof drain system - the Tank Engineer or the Supplier of the Drain System? If the owner doesn't specify a specific drain system, it would be left up to the tank engineer, who in turn, could delegate it as he sees fit.
