I remember seeing years ago some information on Russian tanks where the whole shell was assembled in the shop (minus a closure vert), and then field erected in one piece. Is that what you mean? It seems to me that you would still need decent welders, cranes, etc., to finish out the job. You might reduce time on site, but would still need to import the necessities of tank construction. And if anything, you would need workers that were more skilled, and larger equipment, to do the job. I don't know right offhand if that Russian system was ever used in a cost-competitive environment. I sure haven't seen the practice take the tank-building world by storm.
