CNT on Wiggins Pan Roof

A stright Pan Roof is very vulnerable to sinking. It just needs a single pin hole leak to be doomed. Several times Ive installed bulkhead compartments in a pan roof even if it is under a fixed cone roof and not affected by weather. This way, if a pin hole developes, it will be isolated to an area of the roof and the roof should not sink. It isnt an inexpensive installation, but it provides a lot of piece of mind and safety factor. And is a lot less expensive than a sunken roof.

If you put a dome on the tank, I dont know if a full covered pontoon is necessary or not. Just installing bulkheads basically pontoons without the tops is something to think about. Adding a full covered pontoon is adding weight to the floating roof. Weight displaces volume and means less tank capacity and usually every inch counts. However, the covered pontoon will add rigidity to the roof. Something that might be desirable, especially if your rim space gets tight in areas. Cracked welds are not fun.

The argument for a covered pontoon would be in concern that water would get past the dome and could potentially fill a pontoon or at least could sit in the pontoons an possibly cause corrosion issues. Ive found that domes are not exactly water tight, but I think they would probably block enough water that it wouldnt be an issue and reducing the weight of the roof would take priority. A coating could prevent corrosion issues, or the water might just evaporate fast enough it wont be an issue.

By adding the dome, you might be able to reduce the height of the pan and of the shoe seal, thus increasing working capacity. In many cases you can significantly increase working capacity. It costs a bit of money, but Ive been able to gain 12 or more, which is pretty big money especially over the life of the tank. A lot of this will depend on air permits and other regulations. You might be constrained to the shoe size you have. I think it will depend if putting a dome on allows you to call it an external or internal floater.

Atmospheric Design Pressure
By: Fathi [46]

The whole story is to avoid brittle fracture=

Test temperature shall be equal or warmer than Minimum Metal Design temperature at Test pressure.
------------------

I would limit my minimum testing temperature for a tank (or even for a vessel or a piping system) by the =

Temp = maximum of [ Min(lower shell) , Min(shell# 2) ....Min (Upper shell) ]

For a Shell# i the minimum is function ( of shell tickness , Material group ) and this can be found in API 650 , Fig 2-1
