I find that drawing and specification to be one of the stranger things API has put in the document. Why get so specific on a grounding lug?? It wouldnt surprise me to see that removed or changed in a future edition. Ive had literally hundreds of carbon steel lugs welded to carbon steel tanks. Ive not seen a problem with any of them in 10 yrs of service. So, do I now start removing the carbon steel lugs and welding on stainless? According to API 650 there must be some issue with using carbon steel maybe the corrosion issue, but seems like they should just specify that the connection to the grounding cable needs to be uncoated not the whole lug. Again, I find it odd that API chose this one thing to get so specific on where so much else is left to interpretation.
