External shell mounting of peripheral appurtenances such as launderers

Mounting items such as launderers to the shell of a tank such as a clarifier mounting to either the inner shell surface or outer shell surface generates stresses in the shell wall beyond product load. Can someone share with me the formulation that is used to determine shell thickness to accommodate such added loading? Unlike a point load were Euler’s formulae can be introduced, the type of loading stated above has a greater area of distribution. I assume determining shell stress is the first step.
