Some of the API standards are set up for certain fixed sizes API 12-series, production tanks. This has certain advantages in that it eliminates a lot of the engineering, layout, and detailing that might otherwise be required.

API 650 and API 620 are set up for any size tank specified by the owner. Appendix A includes some standard sizes but they are not widely used.

Selection of the best dimensions will depend on the application, room available, soil bearing, available plate lengths, lining, etc. You might contact a tank supplier or two to discuss a specific case.

For small tanks, making the height and diameter approximately the same will frequently be the most economical tank. For large tanks, setting maximum height at 48 or so and adjusting the diameter is frequently the most economical construction. But it can all vary depending on conditions.
